The Kennedy 3K Heart and Sole Walk for Autism will be Saturday, September 4 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Daffin Park. The Paris Baker Foundation is spearheading this day filled with a walk, games, food, snow cones, flag football and more.
“The mission of this event is to boost the awareness of autism throughout Savannah. Many people do not have the resources or know the first step to cope with autistic kids or adults. I want this to be very informative in positive ways to ensure that people know we are one and not divided,” said Paris Baker, founder of the Paris Baker Foundation and event organizer. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health website autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is defined as a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges. ASD affects 1 in 59 children in Georgia. The term “spectrum” refers to a wide range of signs, symptoms, skills, and levels of impairment. The walk is named after Baker’s friend daughter who has autism. “She has one of the most outgoing & resilient soul ever. Autism is not a disease. It’s a special gift that has to be understood in order to be loved,” said Baker. Other organizations working with Baker is the Anthony Lanier Foundation, The Economic Opportunity Authority for Savannah-Chatham County, Inc. (EOA), Wing-N-It LLC, Shonda’s Potlucks, the Amp’d Up Flag Football League, Pour Larry's and more. Several teams have signed up to play including one team with Kennedy’s father on it. “If you want to learn more about autism come out to this walk. It has been amazing to watch my daughter go from being non-verbal to being a playful little girl who can light up anyone’s room,” said Kenneth Moore, Kennedy’s father and the co-founder of the walk and Paris Baker Foundation. Donations are being accepted and for more information about the walk contact Paris Baker at 912-414-6870 and registration for the walk can be done online at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/kennedys-3k-heart-sole-walk-for-autism-tickets-167911027403.
