Winsphere Jones Productions and Royal Treatment proudly presents The Catharsis: A Beautiful Journey of Neo Classical Monologues. A world premiere production of a new short play by Winsphere Jones. After the show there will be a short question and answer session about the show due to the nature of the play.
The Play The Catharsis is more of an experience that has to be seen as a piece of living art that reveals layer after layer realities we all see in our lives every day. Each character in the story tells a different story that builds upon the life of a woman that everyone involved has had some connection. They share a living documentation of how their lives were impacted by knowing this woman and intern how her life was impacted by theirs for the good or the bad of their relationship. This journey of emotional monologues reach into the heart and soul of what live theatre was made to do; bring out the feelings of others from the experience of the actors take on what a character is feeling on stage. Although this production is short, it provokes dialogue that will lead to a valuable exchange of true-life experiences. Defined, the word catharsis simply means a purging or release of emotional tensions through art. Winsphere Jones creates a path to rich and poetic theatre, setting up an artistic journey to unveil the truth about a young woman's life. Subject Matter The Catharsis' main theme is not spoken directly, but ends up being the bold print for the play rising to its finale. This theme is suicide and some of the reasons one can be led to this end. About 800,000 people die each year from suicide. We must learn more about the warning signs and finding ways to help those who may be in distress for prevention and intervention before it is too late. This play brings to light this difficult subject many find hard to talk about. The Catharsis guides the audience without being too preachy and didactic in its approach, using a poetic touch to create an artistic tone. Symbols The play, although it is a short peek into a character's life, has the theme of innocence being taken driving it. Several symbols are used to indicate the loss of innocence and stealing of something pure. One example used in the play is a red apple, leading our story towards the eventual spiraling of the main character. We have seen this symbol in biblical and fantasy stories, and Winsphere Jones maintains the tradition of allowing something as harmless as an apple to become a catalyst for a significant turn in a person's life. But is the revealing of this innocence being taken that makes the play such an awakening of thought. This is also pain, hurt and grief that will cause a stir as all these elements combine for a story of emotion. The Cast The players in this production are an amalgamation of actors and actresses from many different areas, skills and backgrounds. Teia Roberts, Tony Wright, Erica Scriven, Amelia Brannon, Devin Cunningham, Kareem McMichael, Chyyna Jennings, Kayla Williams, Anthony Williams, Tim Lee. The Playwright Winsphere Jones' journey began in the late 90's while receiving his BA from Valdosta State University with a minor in philosophy and African American Studies. He has been producing works for more than a decade, receiving festival awards in for best Director for The Red Spider in 2015 and Best Overall play for Thy Kingdom Come in 2013. Other productions include The Window in My Mind, The Heart of Montenegro and From the Lion’s Mouth. His Neo Classical style brings back the true essence of theatre, but also creates a new path for African Americans from always playing the contemporary roles that shrinks their mobility as actors. However, it also gives the audience new stories to embrace as a new history of entertainment is unleashed to the world. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)WASHINGTON (AP) — A Capitol Police officer was killed Friday after a man rammed a car into two officers at a barricade outside the U.S. Capitol and then emerged wielding a knife. It was the second line-of-duty death this year for a department still recovering from the Jan. 6 insurrection. Video shows the driver of the crashed car emerging with a knife in his hand and starting to run at the pair of officers, Capitol Police Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman told reporters. The driver stabbed one of the officers, Pittman said. Authorities shot the suspect, who died at a hospital. “I just ask that the public continue to keep U.S. Capitol Police and their families in your prayers,” Pittman said. “This has been an extremely difficult time for U.S. Capitol Police after the events of Jan. 6 and now the events that have occurred here today.” Pittman did not identify the slain officer or suspect. Authorities said that there wasn’t an ongoing threat and that the attack did not appear to be related to terrorism, though the Capitol was put on lockdown as a precaution. There was also no immediate connection apparent between Friday’s crash and the Jan. 6 riot. The crash and shooting happened at a security checkpoint near the Capitol as Congress is on recess. It comes as the Washington region remains on edge nearly three months after a mob of armed insurrectionists loyal to former President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden’s presidential win. Five people died in the Jan. 6 riot, including Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who was among a badly outnumbered force trying to fight off insurrectionists seeking to overturn the election. Authorities installed a tall perimeter fence around the Capitol and for months restricted traffic along the roads closest to the building, but they had begun pulling back some of the emergency measures in recent weeks. |
